Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born
and the day you find out why.”

Each and every one of us was created with a specific purpose in mind. No matter how large or miniscule our assignment may seem, it is important and tailor-made just for us. One of the primary causes of discontentment in life is unhappiness, but that unhappiness may stem from the inability to find and connect to your life’s purpose. In this article, I would like to explain how finding your life’s purpose can be as simple as putting one foot in front of the other, turning passions into purpose, and getting out of your own way.

When searching for purpose in life, we tend to sit stagnant waiting for that “aha moment.” The moment when everything will come together and it will all make sense. But sitting still actually renders opposing results. We become depressed, lackadaisical and uninspired. Moments of uncertainty are the best time to step out into the world and explore. During your exploration, you might find purpose down avenues that you never even considered venturing. Taking courses that always piqued your interest, learning a new skill or hobby, volunteering for a cause that you feel passionate about or revisiting your childhood vision of how you wanted to change the world are all ways where you can place one foot in front of the other while searching for your life’s purpose.

When Oprah Winfrey started as the youngest news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV, all she knew was she had great passion for journalism. Her initial goal was to simply do what she loved. Many times, we overlook our purpose in life by believing that an interest, a hobby or an innate talent is insufficient. We do not or cannot visualize how something that comes so easy to us can actually be the calling that we desperately search to find. Somehow, a God-given gift seems too simple to be our true purpose in life. Being a great listener may transfer over to a career as a life coach, consultant or counselor. The gift of compassion may mean that you should work in the healthcare or teaching professions. Explore your passions – intentionally – and you just might find your purpose.

Another path to finding and connecting to your life’s purpose is getting out of your own way. Often, we over think what our life’s purpose may be while we are actually living in it. We believe that our purpose is some complicated task of cosmic proportions when it may simply be to live life as a good citizen, a good neighbor and a good friend. It may be to share kindness and generosity whenever you can. It may mean to positively affect the world within your reach. If you currently feel contentment in your life, you might already be living in your purpose.

We all have daydreamed about a lavish lifestyle or an awesome career. When we stop searching for fulfillment in the expectations of society, we can truly search our souls for the purpose that has been ingrained deep inside of us from birth. When we start putting one foot in front of the other, turning our passions into purpose and getting out of our own way, we will be able to live in the purpose designed solely for us. This idea should get you up, excited and moving forward to find and connect to your life’s purpose, starting today.
