Choose Tall Over small Every Day
In a group of small-minded people the mind and aim becomes small. In a group of positive thinkers and achievers the mind and aim grows tall.
~ Ty Howard
When I was a teenager, twenty plus years ago, I can remember having and hanging out with two groups of friends.
My first group of friends believed in hanging out and having continuous fun all the time, yet, their lives had little to no direction or purpose. They mainly went to school to hang out. A few of them failed repeatedly and eventually dropped out of school. Getting a quality education, accomplishing desired goals and getting out of the hood (low income and crime-ridden community) wasn’t going to ruin their perception of living life on their terms, keeping it real, and having continuous fun.
My second group of friends believed in hanging out and having fun too, yet, their lives had direction and purpose. They went to school to learn, achieve, and be fully involved in their educational experience to graduate on time. A few of them graduated at the top of their graduating class. To this group—getting a quality education, accomplishing desired goals and getting out of the hood ‘was’ a priority and a goal that would not be compromised at the expense of hanging out and having too much fun, at the wrong time.
Why did I share this childhood story and example with you?
To be honest with you, I truly enjoyed hanging out with and learning from both groups of friends while growing up. Each group had their negative and positive sides. Each group had people in them that said they truly wanted to make something of themselves in order to get out of the hood. What it all came down to was our actions matching our words, as well as the group I chose to hang out and surround myself with the majority of the time. It became evident and clear. I saw and got the big picture. I slowly began taking a strong liking to the feel of choosing and being amongst the Tall. The rewards and growth were always better.
Every day we have the choice to choose Tall Over small. Small thinkers shrink, while Tall thinkers continuously blink to see, take action and capture a brighter future for themselves. Tall thinkers are not excluded from life’s many challenges and setbacks. Tall thinkers get their dose of life just like small thinkers. The difference is Tall thinkers will always win over small thinkers because they see life challenges as stepping-stones instead of tombstones.
It’s been said again and again, “Life is a Choice. Attitude is a Choice. Success is a Choice.” You can make the choice to lose your life entangled in a group of small-mind people where your mind and aim will soon become small. Or you can make the choice to align yourself with a group of positive thinkers and achievers where your mind and aim will grow Tall.
Yes! By the end of my teen years, I chose Tall Over small—and have not changed my mind or looked back since!
Certainly it is good to have positive, quality friends. Not everyone is perfect either; including, you or me. Even so, stay away from anyone who puts you in the compromising position of thinking small and living with low aim.
When it’s your future, your education, your family, your career, your money or your health that’s at stake, it’s your responsibility to see and understand the big picture. The person best suited to act in your best interest is you. The person best suited to making sure you surround yourself with a group of positive, quality friends is you. The person best suited to seeing that you get the most out of life and enjoy it to the fullest is you.
You can do exactly that when you—Choose Tall Over small Every Day!
